The Johnstown Flood, by David McCullough
The Great Bridge, by David McCullough
Fashion........ I have to mention I was wearing a Hilo Hattie (brand) caftan. I am not being paid for an endorsement!! I bought it because I thought I was going on a vacation to Hawaii. I changed my mind, but I still sometimes wear the clothes. I've never been to Hawaii but I have been inside the Statue of Liberty and climbed to the top. It all works out in the end.
I'm pretty excited and /stressed/ because I'm starting and sponsoring a readalong for the first time ever, and doing a book giveaway for the first time as well. I hope this will be the first of many readalongs and book giveaways.

Greatroom Tour // new rug, curtains and cabinet this month!
Переглядів 52День тому
I am finally ready to show you my greatroom (as they call it on the house plan) ... it is small like the rest of my house.. but large enough for me... in fact, I'd say it is perfect for me, and I like the cabin-like feel of having a small home. I guess my biggest problem with it is that I'm likely to make it too crowded with furnishings... I have to be very careful about what I allow in. This m...
Book Acquisitions // aka: book haul

If you can't go buy a book, the next best thing is to look at someone else's books, right? Well, here's a look at some books I recently received in boxes delivered to my porch. Actually, the Christian books get delivered to the local post office and the others get put on my porch. There are no local bookstores so I think I save a lot of money by acquiring books online. They would cost a lot mor...

      I just started reading Mansfield Park last night. The annotations are interesting but I've decided not to stop and read them while I'm reading each chapter, but to go back and read them at the end of each chapter. The book is so thick it is hard to hold! I read only chapter one last night. I think I'll be reading only one chapter or two each evening. The book, in chapter one, told a lot more than the movie did. How far along in the novel are you now?

    Mansfield Park is Jane Austen's most overtly Christian novel. If you read it in that light, I think you'll get a lot out of it.

      I'm used to seeing burnt trees now - there's one outside my kitchen window that my neighbor never cut down - but the sheer scope of the landscape up there on the mountainside still shocks me, because everything for miles, every tree within sight, was burnt. The entire forest is gone. Next time I go up there I'll try to stop at a place with a better view.

      Having no power is doable for me unless it is too hot or too cold. Yesterday was 102 degrees, which was a bit too hot (for me) for enjoying life at home without an air conditioner. The power was on again when I arrived home at 5:30 pm. It had been off 24+ hours.

      I don't have central air so I stay in my bedroom that has a window unit. I could not survive without an A/C because it is hot during the day but even at night as late as 11:00 pm it will still be around 80 plus degrees. That's just too hot especially for nighttime. The humidity just takes it out of me. Any kind of activity and I'm rolling in sweat! Okay, that's enough of my crying. Stay cool and healthy -James

      @@Eldertalk The high temps during the hottest part of the day is around 95° but the real feel is at 110°. The problem here is that we have so many trees in the area plus it even rains a lot which creates High humidity! The humidity is what makes you sweat and zaps all of your energy. And then it just doesn't cool off even late at night. I hate Summer in the South!

    Sorry to hear you don't have electricity. I thought that was a southern cali problem. Daily rolling brown outs were a problem when we finally left and then I think people were sued because they were doing it on purpose. 🤷‍♀

    • @Eldertalk
      @Eldertalk Місяць тому

      They kept our electricity off for about 24 hours this time, but there was no explanation. What I think happened: They turned off electricity in my friend's neighborhood on the other side of the river, to fix something. Then when they turned it back on there was an equipment failure that affected the entire town. Then they discovered they didn't have the part to fix it and had to order it from somewhere out of town. I don't think they did this on purpose... at least I hope not, as it was a hot day. The temperature did get to be over 100 as it will again today. I'm lucky to have air conditioning. When I lived here before (2000-2013) I had only a swamp cooler for my dining room. My friend has no air conditioning and she and her husband are older than I am. But they have the most beautiful walnut tree to sit under, shading their lawn.
